Brixton is situated in south-west London, about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the River Thames and about 4 km (2.5 miles) from the Houses of Parliament. It is linked to Central London by the Underground, by overground railway and by numerous bus services. Brixton is famous, amongst other things, for its street market near to the main railway station and for Electric Avenue, opened in 1888 as one of Britain's first streets lit by electricity. Brixton is a vibrant multi-cultural community, in the central part of the London Borough of Lambeth. During the 1950's large numbers of West Indians migrating to Britain settled in the area. In recent years, Brixton has seen a growth of Portuguese, Spanish and French-speaking African communities. The local economy is dynamic, supporting a wealth of small businesses and an exciting and thriving entertainment and cultural scene.
